Sixteen Years Ago...

Sixteen years ago...There was a young woman who wanted so desperately to know Jesus. Her heart was crushed deeply from abuse and sinfulness that she had vowed she would never repeat/get involved in and yet she found herself so helplessly doing exactly what she said she would never. Her heart was like a stone, emotionally she was spent and cold, from years of stuffing sorrow and keeping up appearances, as she had been taught, and from years of living without the life of Jesus in her heart.

At 24 years old, this young woman, who had been raised in a Mennonite home and saturated with the Word of God at every turn in church, school, reading material, etc prayed a prayer to God one day that changed her life forever, altho it would be another whole year til she would encounter an event that broke the heavens open to pour out light into her heart.

That woman was me. The prayer I prayed was this: "God, if you even exist, I need to know who you are and what you require of me." Imagine that, a girl brought up 'in the church' asking such a question? Obviously, I believed there was a God if I was praying to Him, but I do think that we all need to come to grips with that 'walking in faith' for ourselves for it ever to stick.

I kept asking, seeking, knocking. I kept wondering if I was going to go to heaven or hell when I died. I kept watching those close to me who had something I didn't have and I so desperately wanted it.

One day, my dear sister-in-law, who was newly born of Him  herself, gave me some CD sermons preached by Zac Poonen. I had never heard of him in my life but I wanted to know the truth. If she said that this helped her, and she was changed, then I wanted to know what it was myself!

I had always been taught to be cautious of who I listen to or whose material I read. I actually believe this is true, and still employ that counsel today. That is what I 'heard in my ear' as I put the first sermon into the player that day. I wondered, how will I know that what I hear is true or not? But from the moment I heard him speak, the Holy Spirit witnessed to my heart that this was truth.

In about 3 CD's, I knew that I had never been converted. I was actually relieved to know the answer to my problems. I was convicted but I wasn't condemned. I know some people struggle with condemnation, and I did before I heard Zac explain who God is and what He requires of me. I did not wait to hear the rest of the sermons in that series (I think there were 9 altogether). I knelt down on that plum colored carpet in the single-wide house trailer we lived in on some of the best prairie land I have ever seen in MO, and I got my life aligned with God. I was radically converted, I feel looking back like I was sort of like Paul on the road to Damascus. A lightning bolt came and struck me and I KNEW that I had found the answer that my soul so long had craved to know.

In the years that have followed, I have listened to many of Zac Poonen's sermons. He has been used of God in that way to disciple me and instruct my on true brokenness, living in the fellowship of God, and observing all that Jesus taught. I have never been the same. I have learned so much and I am so delighted that God has answered the cry of my heart.

For 13 of those 16 years, we have lived within 5 hours of where Zac comes to preach in PA every summer. I have longed many times to go hear him in person and thank him for being instrumental in my life, but every year came and went, and I was disappointed but resigned to the will of God.

This year, I got an unexpected surprise. I casually mentioned that Zac would be preaching in a few weeks, not even thinking about going. A few days later, my darling Farmer came to me and said he'll take me to PA to hear Zac preach. I was so shocked and overjoyed.

So this past Friday afternoon, my Farmer and I left our children, who are old enough to stay home alone (circumstances had us decide that they would stay behind), and literally drove through 'deep waters' to get out of NY to go to the meetings, with flash floods like we have never seen in all our 30 plus years of living in NY.

The meetings were wonderful. I came home feeling refreshed in my soul. Lamar found some answers to deep soul searching he has been walking through, and I got to fulfill my 16 year dream of hearing Zac preach in person (He's from India), and shake his hand and tell him the story of God used him to rescue me from eternal death. His face glowed with joy as I told him the story of my conversion and how he helped me to know so much how to 'live in the presence of God'. He humbly said, "That is wonderful, sister! Now go keep doing that!"

I wanted to share this story on here to say that God's timing can be trusted. If you are his child, then he tailor makes your circumstances for you. There is nothing that you wait for that he is too late or too early to fulfill. I have learned this lesson over and over and over again in my short life of being his servant. I sometimes have to still remind myself of this when I am walking thru a circumstance where I think that something just HAS to change soon and I find myself feeling frustrated that it seems God is being a bit lax in doing his job.

The Lord is mighty to save. He will keep us always. Let us be faithful in walking in close fellowship with him every day that He gives us breath.

If you are interested in hearing any of Zac's preaching, he has over a thousand sermons on youtube alone, I think and also many articles, books and sermons on his church's website. I'll post links below.

In My Flesh Dwells No Good Thing...

This has been on my heart for years and I just felt inspired to write it down here, as I ponder a recent situation/discussion on the subject.

We have a flesh. I think all of us are keenly aware of it, altho in some religious circles, this seems to be a subject somewhat avoided and ignored, as if it didn't exist at all when one chooses to identify with Jesus or the interpretation of Jesus that the group may have. Somehow it has become a mindset that it's 'embarrassing' to admit that we have a flesh, I think because we are afraid of being misunderstood or dealt with harshly because you know, after you 'accept Jesus', you are supposed to somehow magically never struggle with the flesh again, because if you do struggle with the flesh, or if  you have a 'feeling from the fleshly side of things', then surely that means you are not truly walking with God. (said sarcastically, shaking my head)

We have a flesh. "In me, that is in my flesh, dwells no good thing." Paul wrote these words to his fellow believers around 2,000 years ago and it is still very true today because there is 'no new thing under the sun'. Mankind is always the same. Ever since the fall, we all have inherited a sinful nature and desperately need to be restored to our Father God through His son, Jesus. Every day that I walk this earth, I am grateful to God that He redeemed my life from destruction and crowned me with lovingkindness and tender mercy. But I am keenly aware of the fact that I have a flesh that I can choose to serve at any time. It takes a moment-by-moment commitment to trust wholly in the capability of the Holy Spirit to guide me into all truth, a complete surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, in order for me to experience the fullness and the abundance of that life He came to give me.

We have a flesh. But please let's not celebrate it. It needs to be crucified and buried with Christ so that we can experience His resurrection power and newness of life. It is not something to celebrate that I am capable of acting in selfishness and godlessness.

That I can feel godless and selfish at times is definitely something true. However, what I like to tell young women that I counsel, and what I've learned in my own journey, is this: FEELINGS are not facts. FEELINGS allow you to decide whether or not to ponder that thought further, allowing it to pass through into an action, or to toss it out and replace it with something full of LIFE from Jesus.

I see people sometimes almost celebrating our flesh. I think this likely is a reactionary measure from being oppressed by a religious community in their youth but I would like to say that this is not really the response that God is looking for. He calls us to lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us. He calls us to become NEW. Nowhere in this 'becoming new' do I see room to glorify the flesh. If I am called to glorify my Father who is in heaven, then I am called to bear my Cross, deny myself and put my fleshly 'feelings' where they belong.

So my encouragement in this blog post is two fold:
1. Don't celebrate the flesh.
2. Don't act like you have no fleshly feelings ever that you need to take to the Cross

There's a ditch on either side. May we follow our Lord Jesus on the narrow way that leads Home, turning neither to the left hand nor to the right.

I am deeply  humbled at the mercy and grace my Father has given me thru the gift of redemption. It is not of my 'works', lest I should boast in my accomplishements. Living a consistently free life is HIS doing. "Here's my heart, Lord. Take and seal it, seal if for Thy courts above."

That Others May See...

The many workings of God I will only ever see 'thru a glass darkly'
on this side of eternity.
But something really stood out to me when I read this
Psalm on this quote card one day this week,
and then it popped up again in the "Praise Him Anyway" reading challenge
that our family is doing several nites a week.

If I have been rescued from a pit and my feet have
been set on a rock
and I have a firm foundation on which to stand,
this puts a song in my heart and I praise the Lord.
It's obvious in the last two lines of this Psalm
that the praise will radiate from my life and my mouth
because other people will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in Him.

This sentiment is echoed in the Sermon on the Mount
where Jesus tells us to let our lights shine before men
'that they may see your good works and glorify
your Father which is in heaven'.

The purpose of people noticing the change in me?
SO that they may be reminded of Who is calling them
to repentance and a new life.

Nothing new here. But fresh thots that blessed my heart deeply.
Let us go forth in full and glad surrender,
loving the Lord and knowing Him.
We have a God who yearns to have us follow him fully,
and who has commissioned us to be witnesses that
Jesus lives!

Out of My Stony Griefs...

"Then with my waking thots,
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I'll raise..."

As the words of this well-known song spilled out of my playlist
this afternoon on my way home from sitting in a lawn chair on a gravel farm lane with my Farmer as he ate his lunch before returning to the field, my thots begans to come together and inspiration hit for a blog post after a LONG silence.

My silence has been for a number of reasons. It has been a rocky and rough way this winter...as God works in our lives preparing us for the coming season, the details of which only He knows. I have walked through deep heartache and the enemy has thrown the Big D at me: discouragement... I've tripped in it. I've fought against it in Jesus' name...I've wept. I've been deeply pained. But I remain firm on the Rock of Ages cleft for me.

This morning I arose and I texted two friends: "Today I choose joy in redemption and appreciation for the blessings along life's way. He is worthy." I also told a friend that I decided QUITE FIRMLY to praise my Maker today.

You know what? Ever since that 'quite firmly' purposeful choice, I have had some pretty amazing thots downloaded into my heart from Father God. One of them is this:

Do we truly believe that the people that are hurting and disappointing us (righteously, not selfishly)
are used of God to prepare us for what is next, to not hold onto the community/desire for people we think should be to us who they are choosing not to be. Perhaps they should be, but in all things
God works it out for our good and His glory.

I took a few minutes to bask in the quietness after my Farmer went back to his fields.
The farm was quiet and still. Birdsong floated in on the spring breeze.
I stood looking across the road to the pasture and the hills beyond.
I noticed the bright greens of new leaves.
And I thot: what a beautiful season is Spring, perhaps even more beautiful
after walking through the hardness of Winter to get there.
So it is in life. It is hard to walk through winter seasons of grief and unknowns.
It is hard to walk through pain and heartache,
wondering where we belong in certain situations,
watching others have what you yourself thot God wanted for you,
grieving losses,
honestly seeking wisdom for moving forward,
wondering which direction God is opening a door,
watching others as they walk thru their breaking with God
feeling powerless to 'fix anything', but all the while knowing
God can do it better than you can...

Winter snows are tiresome sometimes.
They are hard work sometimes.

But Spring's blush is amazing.
The colors pop out vibrantly in blades of grass
and in the daffodil's cheery flower.
Weariness of winter snows is soon a forgotten past
as we dig in the dirt of the garden,
and admire the dogwood's pink blooms.

Our hearts are cheered
 and our skin is warmed
 by the
kiss of the
golden sunshine.

Hang in there, friend.
 If you are in Winter,
just keep walking.
Worship your God.
Praise your Maker.
Honor your King.
Walk humbly with
your God.
He is Worthy of all
praise, glory and honor.

"As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease."

Lessons from Tea Cups...

Recently, my daughters brainstormed into being a ladies' luncheon for the mothers and daughters at our little church. They asked me to share a some tea cup-related inspiration with everyone so I pondered a few weeks, and after asking the Lord, and some friends, I came up with the following:

Tea cups come in varied sizes, shapes, and with different marking or none at all. Some are exquisitely beautiful, while others are simply elegant. They come from different parts of the world and make their abode in our cabinets sometimes from far away.  But they all are created with a common purpose in mind: to hold something, whether it is tea, coffee, hot cocoa, little flower bouquets, floating candles, or potpourri.

So it is with people. We are all created by God. Some are tall, some are short. There are thick ones and thin ones. There are different skin tones and nationalities. There are different personalities. And we come from the four corners of the earth. But in all our differences, the Master Potter has created us all with one specific purpose in mind: To known Him and make Him known/ to love Him and others. No matter where we go in life, or where we've come from, always this is the single most important purpose, the Purpose of all purposes that He has in mind for us.

As we go through our lives, may we always remember the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:31:

Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do; do everything for God's glory. Teacups in journaling Bible.:

One of my friends sent me the following story when she heard that
I was giving a talk on tea cups at a ladies' luncheon. I was so blessed by it:

The Tea Cup

There was a couple who used to go England to shop in the beautiful store. This was their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques and pottery and especially tea-cups. They said,”May we see that? We’ve never seen one quite so beautiful.”
As the lady handed it to them, suddenly the tea-cup spoke, “You don’t understand.” It said, “I have not always been a tea-cup.There was a time when I was red clay. My master took me and rolled me and patted me over and over and I yelled out, “Let me alone,” but he only smiled, “Not yet!!”
“Then I was placed on a spinning wheel and suddenly I was spun around and around and around. ‘Stop it !! I’m getting dizzy!’ I screamed. But the master only nodded and said, ‘Not yet.’
Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I yelled and knocked at the door. I could see him through the opening and I could read his lips as he shook hid head, ‘Not yet’.
“Finally, the door opened, he put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. And he brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. ‘Stop it, Stop it!!’ I cried. He only nodded, ‘Not yet!’.
Then suddenly he put me back in to the oven, not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I knew I would suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed. I cried. I would never make it. I was ready to give up. But the door opened and he took me out and placed me on the shelf.
An hour later he handed me a mirror and said ‘Look at yourself.’ And I did. I said, ‘That’s not me; that couldn’t be me. It’s beautiful. I’m beautiful.’

“I want you to remember, then,’ he said, ‘I know it hurts to be rolled and patted, but if I just had left you alone, you’d have dried up. I know it made you dizzy to spin around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled. I know it hurts and it was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn’t put you there, you would have cracked. I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all over, but if I hadn’t done that, you never would have hardened. You would not have had any colour in your life, and if I hadn’t put you back in that second oven, you wouldn’t survive for long because the hardness would not have held. Now you are a finished product. You are what I had in mind when I first began with you.” God knows what He’s doing [ for all of us ]. He is the potter, and we are His clay. He will mould us and make us, so that we may be made into a flawless piece of work to fulfill His good, pleasing and perfect will.
– Submitted by Cathy Pinto

What a beautiful picture of the Potter and the clay.
And what reality it is many times as we go thru
the moulding and firing process...
we kick and scream until we figure out that
He knows what He's doing and we yield to
letting Him produce in us the peaceable fruits of righteousness.

We enjoyed our day with the ladies.
There was pink. There were tea cups. There were white skirts.
And sheer lacey cloths. Candles. Tulips and icicle lights.
It was lovely.
(happy sigh)
I'm glad my daughters thot of this and
helped to get it accomplished.

The Root of Fruit...

Fruits of the spirit paper craft - Fruits of the spirit puzzle. See my template on this board.:

So I've been thinking....I hear about New Year's resolutions and I applaud everyone who has goals at the beginning of the year for areas in their life that are lacking. I've done the same thing myself sort of as a commitment to God that I am willing to let him work in me the peaceable fruit of righteousness. God honors that and makes sure we have opportunities to grow in those areas as only He can.

The other evening we were discussing in Bible study with our church family the need to have the fruit of the Spirit as our 'goals' for  a new year. I had a 'revelation' that evening, but it really was an old understanding coming at me in a new and amazing way.

Paul lists the fruit of the flesh in Galatians 5, and then he lists the fruit of the Spirit. How beautiful the Spirit fruit is! But then he tells us HOW to produce that fruit after he lists it. It is simply by walking in the Spirit and living by the Spirit. How simply refreshing that thot was to me. If I am walking and living that way, then God will produce that fruit (HIS fruit) in me.

Often times we are walking through life and we don't really know what God is up to at the immediate time of his working. That's far beyond our comprehension. What all our obedience is giving him aid to do in our lives is too great for us to even see at the time of it's 'doing'. But in a few years, we can look back and see with greater understanding just what God was doing and how he was increasing the Life and Fruit in our lives.

We are well aware of the lack in our lives if we are honest. The truth of the matter is, we might as well admit that outside of Christ, we are nothing. Scripture says that. Outside of Christ, our righteousness is filthy rags and of no value to God. Only the life of Christ in us makes us acceptable and clean before the God of all the ages. If there is a weak area in our lives where we feel some of that Spirit fruit should be greater, all we need to do is ask our selves what roots we have left 'unaxed'.

Chastening yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Heb. 12:11: We strive so hard sometimes to be right, to do the right things, and to produce that fruit that we surely as Christians MUST have. Thse are noble aspirations, but the work we really need to do is as Jesus said, to "lay the ax to the root of the tree", meaning to surrender all and to get ourselves out of the way. Paul calls it 'being crucified with Christ". Seriously, my friends, whenever we get to that place of complete brokenness in our lives, where we have laid down it all...the dreams, the hopes, the plans, the lofty aspirations to make a difference in the world in specific terms we have laid out, the family, the friends, the reputation, houses, lands...EVERYTHING...then the ax has sufficiently killed that root of selfishness and pride to the point that JESUS CHRIST is the theme of our lives.

While it is true that we can always choose to serve the flesh, we can get to a place in our lives where we truly are broken and we truly embrace the cross bearing life that Jesus called us to embrace. The Cross is an instrument of death. Everyone who heard Jesus' repeatedly say that to follow Him, we need to deny ourselves and take up our cross, understood the reality of the word picture he used because it was a common instrument used to administer the death penalty to criminals. If we 'fall on the Rock and are broken', fully surrendered to Christ in everything, then our biggest struggle will not be ourselves. Sure, we'll still be given the same opportunities to live for me or to live for Him, but the decision will be made and we will swiftly choose Him on a consistent basis.

”Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. . . . For my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matthew 11:28, 30).: If you do not know this kind of life and are a Christ follower, I am hear to shout out an encouragement that you truly can know that rest that He talks about in Matthew where he calls us to come unto him, all who labor and are heavy laden. BUT notice how he says our rest will come..."take my yoke upon you and learn of me and you will find rest for your souls'. So learning of Christ, thru carrying our cross that kills our flesh, is where true rest comes from. And this endless striving to have the right fruit and bigger fruit and more fruit will cease. No longer will we have to worry if we are producing it or not, because we WILL.

Is there no work to be done then? Absolutely yes...but the work is at the root level, in surrender and obedience to God. When that is our life choice consistently and daily, then the fruit will grow... God assures us of that. "Whatever you sow, that you will also reap".

I share this, at the beginning of 2017, to encourage us all to embrace the life of cross bearing that Jesus calls us to embrace. It is totally worth it. In it, there is LIFE and there is REST...

Love and blessings,
Marcia

PS
I feel incredibly blessed to have been trained by a preacher who speaks it simply but straight to the heart...Zac Poonen's sermons on this subject have stirred much hope in my heart thru the years and helped me to know how to lay that ax to the root of the tree. One sermon comes to mind where he tells the story of a certain insane asylum that had a test they gave patients to see if they were ready to leave the facility or not. They gave them a mop and a bucket, and then turned on a faucet in their cell and told them to clean up the mess. Only the ones who turned off the faucet were given a clean bill of health to leave the place. So it is in our Christian walk...we can use a mop and a bucket all the rest of our days on earth. Or we can turn off the faucet (lay the ax to the root of the tree). From the moment I heard this the first time, I knew which one I would choose! It has been the second most important decision of my life, the first one being that I turned from my sins and received salvation by faith in Jesus' Christ. The faucet sometimes gets bumped back on again, but God gives us the power to turn it off and live consistently in the realm of freedom that comes when we wear Jesus' yoke, which is easy and when we take on his burden, which is light. This is the hope of his resurrection!!! I am delighted that I get to live in it daily, by the power of my Savior!

As the Sun Sets on 2016...

Joshua 1:9 ~ My dad had a necklace he wore every day with this bible verse on it to remind him to stay strong. <3 Learn Biblical Spanish with http://learnspanishthroughbible.blogspot.com. Try it, practice it and happy learning. Blessings.:

The past few days I've been reflecting on the end of another year...and as I normally do, I have been journaling a summary of the year as I remember it. My troubled thots from the past few weeks on 'why do I feel dull and tired in my soul?' suddenly became clear to me:

IT'S BEEN A WILD RIDE!

But oh, the blessing as I review it all and see the hand of God as He penned
the lines of my story each and every day.

From identifying
with Jesus thru gossip
and slander spoken
unjustly,
to walking with some very dear friends through some tough
spots in the journey and seeing God work amazing miracles
of healing in their body, soul and spirit,
to having my daughter walk thru a hard time for 4 months of the this
past year in Lyme-related struggles and watching God heal her
and help her to return to more normal living that she has known
since 2014,
to having my husband go thru a scary health crisis and watching God
bring healing and clarity to that situation,
to helping to prepare for and enjoy a special wedding,
to saying goodbye to the bride who moved cross-country,
to having some deep disappointments from sources that we
never expected,
to being mysteriously ill myself and seriously 'hindered' for 10 weeks
at the beginning of 2016, and then slowly feeling the healing hand
of God bring me back to mostly normal again,
(and wading through the unexpected $10,000.00 medical bills;
thank God for his provision in helping us get them paid, tho we
had other 'hopes and dreams' for that money),
to 2/3 of our children becoming licensed drivers this year,
to having the unique situation of having ALL of our children
be teenagers at the same time (for one year only...)
to turning 40,
and celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary...

Yes, the year has been filled with much
that has been beyond our control...
But God has been faithful and through every
trial and every smile, there has been
the undeniable knowing that I am my Beloved's
and my Beloved is mine.

The year has been filled with moments of awe...
the powerful Holy Spirit that helped us over
the rough waters of annoyance at each other
(oh my yes, my Farmer and I have those, too!)
and choosing LOVE instead...
the moments of tender, loving care from my Farmer
and our children when I was sick and could not
walk (I shuffled!) for awhile...
the sunsets enjoyed over the lake,
the friends gathered in our home various times,
the worship services with our church family,
the connection with those of like precious faith from
various churches whose hearts beat with ours in
wanting the simplicity that is in Christ
(this is special, because for many years, we have known
barriers and walls that satan helped to erect that are not
God's heart),
and family times reading through Proverbs, or reciting
Scripture, or simply playing games and laughing together.
I loved all the deep hearted conversations I've had
throughout the year with friends both young and older...
Sprinkled among the mundane, these have been
sweet gifts from our Lord to my heart!

The waters of passivity lap dangerously close to my feet
these days and I think I need to simply stop and
drink more deeply from the Well. My spirit is a bit tired
as we end this  year, but I am holding to God's unchanging Hand.

As the sun sinks beneath the horizon,
ending the year 2016,
my hope and plea is that we all will
make Jesus our everything...
and that we will live the purpose that He
gave us on earth:
to Know Him and making Him known,
to love Him with our all,
and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
All else hinges on this purpose.
If what we are about to do or say does not
fit the purpose, let's purpose not to do or say it.

Here's looking to the dawning of another year,
as God tarries.

Love and blessings,
Marcia

PS
The other day, as I was journaling my year in review,
my daugher was listening to music in the other room as she
folded laundry.
This song came across her playlist and I
immediately was struck with how well it fit my thots.
I share it here for your inspiration.

I Can Trust Jesus...

This quote has grabbed my attention alot. I have had opportunity, just like anyone else in this world, to experience the reality ...
